21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa
This Momoyama period circuit-style garden was opened in 1636 at a teahouse associated with the Hosokawa family, who were feudal lords in the Edo era. It is one of the finest Japanese gardens in Kumamoto Prefecture. The garden was modeled after the fifty-three stages of the Tokaido, and features splendid scenery such as a landscaped hill made in the image of Mount Fuji. Because the water in the garden filters down from the Aso area, it is also known for its clarity. You can take a stroll and enjoy the beautiful sights of the garden all year round. The garden also contains Kokin Denjunoma, which was recognized as an important cultural property of Kumamoto Prefecture. You can savor tea and Japanese confectionary while taking in the scenery.
