The Iyo navy, which was based in Hiburijima and active from the Northern and Southern Dynasties Period to the Edo Period, often ate Uwajima taimeshi, also referred to as kaizokumeshi (pirate food) or ryoshimeshi (fisherman’s food). The origins of this dish can be traced back to fishermen who, after eating sashimi on the boat and drinking sake from rice bowls, would add cooked rice to the remains of the sake in the bowl, on top of which they would place bream sashimi covered in soy sauce. Preparing this dish required no heat, and featured fresh bream, and is a dish created by fishermen who wanted a meal which could be quickly prepared and at the same time enhanced the quality of the ingredient.
