21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa
Each year the Akita Kanto Festival is held between August 3 and August 6. With a history of over 260 years, it is now designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan. Kanto poles sometimes as heavy as 50 kg are raised aloft by bearers who perform a variety of techniques.
Although the Akita Kanto Festival is held just once a year, the Neburi Nagashi Kan features challenge corners where you can experience Kanto poles yourself, conjuring up a festival atmosphere at any time. Depending on the time of year, you can also view Kanto pole performances there.
