21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa
Manda Pit was recognized as a world heritage site in July 2015, as a Site of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining. It features two of the largest shafts found in Japan, and was fitted with an extensive range of equipment and machinery. Manda Pit reached the zenith of its prosperity early in the first decade of the 1900s, and supported Japan's industrial development. The sturdy brick buildings preserved there look very impressive, and the pithead that coal miners used to move above and below ground and machine room that still houses massive machinery are also sights to behold.
Regular tours of the Manda Pit are given by former coal miners with excavation experience.
