Jakoten is a popular food familiar among all residents of Ehime Prefecture, from children to the elderly.
It is one variety of nerimono or fishcake, in which fresh small fish (minnows) which are sourced from the waters of Uwakai are pureed, with the skin on, and formed into small oval shapes and deep fried. Originally called zakoten, it is known today as jakoten. Priced at around 150 yen a piece, jakoten is also a popular souvenir.
This flavorsome food is packed with the umami of small fish, and the high levels of calcium, DHA and EPA also make jakoten extremely healthy.
