Imabari Castle is a castle located by the sea and boasts unique features such as a 5-layered, 6-story donjon and seawater moat, and is included in “Japan’s 3 Major Japanese Castles by the Sea” and “Japan’s 100 Best Castles”. It was designed to make the most of its strategic location of Imabari which lies on the sea lanes. At the time the castle was surrounded by three moats and could be directly accessed by boats travelling from the sea. The outstanding skills of Todo Takatora, who designed the castle, are evident throughout the grounds.
Lighting has since been added to the castle with 100 lights, designed in a way that features various brightness, colors and angles, installed in the stone walls and on the donjon, illuminating the castle at night. The warm colors of the lights create an effect of the castle looming in the darkness, while the reflections of the donjon and stone walls on the moat create a fantasy world that contrasts with the appearance of the castle during the day.
