These five bridges that span a total of 12 kilometers were opened in September 1966, and connect mainland Kyushu with the Amakusa Islands. The road is known informally as the Amakusa Pearl Line, and this year the 50th anniversary of the five bridges' opening will be celebrated. Now considered a classic sightseeing spot, it is a popular route to take a drive. The view of the sunset from there has been selected as one of the 100 most beautiful in Japan.
